Group for ocean supercomputer modeling

Group for ocean and sea climate modeling at IO RAS

About the Group

Group for ocean and sea climate modeling at IO RAS was created in 2007. Its main goal is to study the hydrodynamic processes in the World Ocean and the internal seas of Russia (Caspian and Black) using high-resolution models of ocean dynamics on massively parallel computers. Over the past years, we have developed new areas of research, namely, the development of supercomputer methods for assimilating large amounts of data for highly accurate ocean forecast, as well as research on the development of a joint atmosphere — ocean — sea-ice model for studying Earth climate changes and weather forecasts. Great attention in the organization of research is given to working with talented undergraduate and graduate students from leading universities.

INMIO — Model of Ocean Hydrodynamics

  • First Russian model of the World Ocean with high resolution (1/10 °)
  • High performance and scalability on massively parallel computers
  • Three-pole / bipolar / spherical coordinate system + z / sigma-z coordinates in the vertical
  • Free surface, explicit description of the barotropic mode
  • More
Coupler

CMF Coupler

  • Combines models of the Earth system components into a unified framework
  • Provides an efficient API for interprocess exchanges inside and between components
  • Performs data mapping (re-interpolation) between grids of different components
  • Performs data input/output offloading computational processor cores
  • More

Data System

  • ARGO data assimilation
  • Satellite altimetry (AVISO) data assimilation
  • Sea ice data assimilation
  • Ensemble Optimal Interpolation (EnOI)
  • More

Lagrange Model

  • Efficient implementation on massive-parallel computers
  • High accuracy of results compared to offline models due to joint calculations with the INMIO model
  • Assigning particles a set of individual properties
  • Radionuclide decay modelling
  • More
